Just Getting Started

I’m new at blogging or at any use  for the internet, aside from e-mail. I entered this class late due to confusion with registration but I hope to gain a better understanding of blogging and online news writing.

I’m going into my third year at San Jose State, and now that I finished my lower division general education, I’m still trying to figure out what my major will really be for my final years here at state. I wrote for my high school newspaper at Gilroy High School, and I was the opinions editor for it my senior year. I have a passion for opinion writing, but I look forward to getting a better grasp on news writing. I am looking forward to jumping back into Journalism after two years away.

Lead #1: Tuesday, the Butte County Court rewarded a local couple a whopping $150,000 for injuries they suffered from a traffic accident back in March.

Lead #2: Forecasters button their coats as the second of a series of snowstorms is due to hit the Sierra later today.

Lead #3: Yesterday, a six-story building on 204 Union Avenue became engulfed in flames, leaving 41 families in danger. Police reported that after a quick response, all families were evacuated and the three heroic fireman suffered only minor injuries.

Have I got what it takes?

I don’t really believe in career testing for the same reasons that I don’t believe that this test accurately determines whether or not anyone is fit for journalism. I got a 22. Although it’s not the best score, I know that I’m not ready to be a professional journalist yet, and I wonder if after two years of Journalism courses I could change my score if I took it again. It took me a long time to figure out what I want to do with my college education, and I still haven’t changed my major from psychology to Journalism, as a matter of fact. So although I’m still testing the waters with a major that does mean a lot to me, I’m not ready to throw in the towel. I may not completely agree that even a professional psychologist, let alone a standarized test could determine if I’ll ever be fit for Journalism in the future. But I am not ready to throw the towel in without putting my heart into it first. : )
